It’s a new year and I think it’s time you try some therapy.

It would be unusual if I started this blog without wishing you a happy new year. I hope it comes with love and blessings.

A new year. A new you.

In the African culture, everyone was always closely huddled up living in one compound. There was always someone to talk to. To vent to. To lend a shoulder to cry on.

Fast forward to 2022, we have arrived to a pandemic with so much social media interaction that barely allows us to have a community of people to rely on.

I recently started my journey with therapy and it has been absolutely incredible. I think there has always been a stigma around it especially in the African community but given our limited interactions due to the pandemic. It may be necessary for you to talk it out with someone.

I’m the biggest believer in identifying habits and going to therapy has been instrumental in identifying habits that I don’t want to carry down from one generation to another.

In the words of Marianne Wilson. In order for true change to happen;

1. You must be able to identify a pattern.

2. You must be able to take it to God and pray about it.

Therapy is instrumental for Point 1.

I also think that there is power in confession and letting things go. Therapy sessions have always left me feeling a lot more lighter. They have also sometimes left me with the therapy blues. I will explain what that is in the next blog post.

For now… I would highly encourage some therapy to anyone. You don’t have to be going through major life changes or be depressed to do it. Do it because your mental health matters.

I mean you go to a place of worship for your spiritual health. A gym for your physical health. And now… A therapist for your mental health. It’s a form of self care and an investment for a better you in this new year.

Stay blessed.

  1. Hey Khethi

    I can concur enough on the importance of therapy. Especially when you not facing a major life crisis as by then you have so much to unpack that it may feel like it’s not helping fast enough.

    I am stealing your words from the last paragraph 🤗 they are just so profound! Keep on keeping on 🌸
